Itinerary

Your journey begins at Kathgodam, a quaint town nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas. From here, you’ll embark on a long but scenic drive to Khati, passing through picturesque towns like Almora, Bageshwar, Kapkot, and Karmi. The road winds through lush green valleys, terraced fields, and quaint villages, offering a glimpse into the traditional lifestyle of the region. Khati, the last inhabited village on this route, serves as your overnight halt. Settle into your accommodation, take in the crisp mountain air, and prepare for the trekking adventure ahead.

The real adventure begins today as you trek from Khati to Dwali. After an early breakfast, you’ll start your hike through the dense forests that surround Khati. The trail offers a serene experience, with the sound of rustling leaves and chirping birds accompanying your every step. You’ll pass by a beautiful waterfall, offering a perfect spot to rest and refresh. As you continue your journey, the forest gradually gives way to more open landscapes. By late afternoon, you’ll reach Dwali, a small settlement nestled in a valley. Enjoy a hearty meal and rest for the night.

Today’s trek takes you from Dwali to the Base Camp, the gateway to the higher altitudes. After an early breakfast, you’ll begin your ascent through a landscape dotted with alpine meadows, known locally as Bugyals. The trail follows the course of the Pindar River, which you’ll eventually cross to reach the Base Camp. Along the way, you’ll pass by Phurkiya, a popular camping spot for trekkers. The trek is moderate but steady, with a gradual increase in altitude. Upon reaching the Base Camp, you’ll be greeted with panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. Set up camp, relax, and acclimatize to the higher altitude.

Acclimatization is crucial at high altitudes, and today is dedicated to this process. After breakfast, you’ll embark on a load ferry to Camp 1, carrying essential gear and supplies. The trail is steep, with a 60-70 degree climb in some sections, offering a challenging but rewarding experience. The higher you go, the more stunning the views become. You’ll pass through rocky terrain, with occasional patches of snow. After reaching Camp 1 and dropping off the supplies, you’ll return to the Base Camp for an overnight stay. This day not only helps you acclimatize but also prepares you mentally and physically for the ascent to higher altitudes.

Today, you’ll make the full ascent to Camp 1, carrying only the essentials for the next few days. The trail is the same as the previous day, but this time you’ll be moving at a steady pace, knowing that this is your home for the night. As you ascend, the views of the surrounding peaks become more spectacular, with the added thrill of being in a remote and challenging environment. One of the highlights of this day is reaching a spot with Jio’s 4G network, a surprising luxury at such high altitudes. Set up camp and rest for the night, knowing that you’re one step closer to the summit.

The trek from Camp 1 to the Summit Camp is short but demanding. You’ll start early, just after sunrise, to make the most of the daylight. The trail involves crossing a glacier, which adds an element of excitement to the trek. As you ascend, the air becomes thinner, making every step a challenge. Upon reaching the Summit Camp, you’ll be surrounded by towering peaks, with the summit of Baljori tantalizingly close. The camp is set up in a sheltered spot, providing some respite from the cold winds. Spend the evening preparing for the final ascent, checking your equipment, and getting some rest.

The most awaited day of the trek has arrived. At 2 a.m., you’ll start your climb to the Baljori Summit, equipped with all necessary gear. The ascent is steep and challenging, with the path leading you through rocky terrain and icy patches. As you approach the summit, the views open up, revealing a 360-degree panorama of the Kumaon Himalayas. From the top, you can see 80% of the peaks in the region, a sight that makes all the effort worthwhile. After spending some time at the summit, soaking in the views, you’ll begin your descent back to the Summit Camp for a short rest. Afterward, you’ll continue descending to Camp 1, where you’ll spend the night.

After the exhilaration of the summit, today’s descent to Base Camp feels almost leisurely. You’ll have a relaxed start, enjoying breakfast at Camp 1 before beginning the descent. The trail is familiar, but the views continue to captivate, especially as you move from the rocky high-altitude terrain back to the greener pastures near Base Camp. Once at Base Camp, you can relax and celebrate the successful summit. The day offers plenty of time for reflection, photography, and simply enjoying the beauty of the mountains.

Today, you’ll retrace your steps back to Dwali. The trek is relatively easy, as you’ll be descending, but it’s still important to move carefully. The path takes you back through Phurkiya, and across the Pindar River, before leading you to Dwali. The lower altitude will feel refreshing, and you’ll notice the change in vegetation and temperature as you descend. Once in Dwali, you’ll have time to rest, enjoy a hot meal, and maybe even explore the area a little more.

Your penultimate day on the trek sees you returning to Khati. The trail is familiar, and you’ll likely make good time as you descend through the forests and meadows. Upon reaching Khati, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the village, interact with the locals, and immerse yourself in the rich culture of the region. The evening is a time to relax, enjoy the company of your fellow trekkers, and reflect on the incredible journey you’ve just undertaken.

The final day of your adventure begins early as you pack up and start the drive back to Kathgodam. The long journey takes you back through the towns and villages you passed on the way in, but now with a sense of accomplishment and many memories to cherish. By late afternoon, you’ll arrive in Kathgodam, where your journey concludes. From here, you can catch a train or drive back to your home, carrying with you the stories and experiences of an unforgettable trek.
