The adventure begins with a scenic drive from Kathgodam to Gogina, a picturesque village nestled in the Kumaon Himalayas. The drive, though long, offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains, rivers, and terraced fields. Gogina, situated at 1,950 meters, is known for its serene environment and traditional Kumaoni culture. Upon arrival, you can explore the village and acclimatize to the altitude.
The trek officially begins with a short but beautiful hike from Gogina to Namik Village. The trail takes you through dense forests and across small streams, with occasional glimpses of the surrounding peaks. Namik Village, located at 2,260 meters, is famous for its hot springs and ancient temples. The village offers a glimpse into the traditional way of life in the Himalayas, making it a fascinating stop on the trek.
On Day 3, the trail ascends steeply towards Thala Bugyal, a high-altitude meadow surrounded by towering peaks. The trek is challenging, with a significant gain in altitude, but the breathtaking scenery makes it worthwhile. As you reach Thala Bugyal, you are greeted with expansive views of lush green meadows against the backdrop of snow-capped mountains. This idyllic campsite offers a peaceful retreat in the heart of the Himalayas.
The trek from Thala Bugyal to Ranthan Top is a gradual ascent through alpine meadows and rocky terrain. As you climb higher, the vegetation becomes sparser, and the views become more dramatic. Ranthan Top, at nearly 4,000 meters, offers panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, including Nanda Devi and Nanda Kot. This is an excellent spot to take in the beauty of the Himalayas and prepare for the upcoming challenges.
Day 5 involves a challenging trek from Ranthan Top to Bian Dabali, crossing rugged terrain and ascending to higher altitudes. The trail is steep and demanding, but the rewards are immense, with stunning views of the Himalayan landscape at every turn. Bian Dabali, at 4,200 meters, is a remote campsite where you can rest and acclimatize before attempting the Kaguti Bhel Pass the next day.
This is the most challenging and exciting day of the trek as you cross the Kaguti Bhel Pass, the highest point of the journey at 4,750 meters. The ascent is steep and requires careful navigation, but the views from the pass are nothing short of spectacular. After spending some time at the pass, you will descend to Moher Pani, a beautiful spot surrounded by towering peaks. The descent can be tricky, so proceed with caution.
The trek from Moher Pani to Poting Base is a gradual descent through alpine forests and meadows. The trail offers stunning views of the surrounding valleys and distant peaks. As you descend, the air becomes warmer, and the vegetation becomes denser. Poting Base, at 3,200 meters, is a peaceful campsite where you can relax and enjoy the tranquility of the mountains.
The final day of the trek involves a short hike from Poting Base to Bogdiyar, followed by a drive to Munsyari. The trek is relatively easy, with a gradual descent through forested trails. Once you reach Bogdiyar, a vehicle will be waiting to take you back to Munsyari. The drive offers a chance to relax and reflect on the incredible journey you’ve completed. Upon reaching Munsyari, you can explore the town and enjoy the local culture.
The journey concludes with a drive from Munsyari back to Kathgodam. The drive takes you through the beautiful Kumaon region, offering one last chance to take in the stunning Himalayan landscapes.
